The
relationship between a father and son in Northern Ireland has broken
down. They cannot speak without a descent into abuse. But this is no
"generation gap" crisis. The father's discovery of his
son's involvement with terrorism comes too late to save the boy's life.
Tightly
written and technically complex, this surreal production succeeds as
a nightmare. It has three parts, beginning with the father hearing a
gunshot in his hallway. The main body of the piece is his journey
through the house. Images repeat, sounds distort, almost all the
dialogue is heard as a distant voice-over and the lighting is blood
red. These devices conspire to prevent him from reaching and saving
his son. The climax comes as he discovers his son lying dead in the
hallway, with a gunshot wound through his face.
It's
very stirring stuff...
