If
any man should find himself between the Devil and the deep blue sea,
he must never let his fear of drowning triumph.
A
low-rent publisher rejects the latest manuscript of MacKenna, a
struggling novelist. But Cadell offers him a contract for fame,
success and wealth, in exchange for his soul. MacKenna agrees, with
payment deferred to the end of his life, allowing him to enjoy the
riches of a trashy and mediocre career. Yet as he reaches his golden
years, he must honour the Faustian contract.
At
a time when the rest of us were lavished with Beta SP cameras, Jim
was forced to work with obsolete U-matic equipment and endure a
traumatic shoot. The resultant footage appeared soft, dark and
discoloured. But somehow this look is astonishingly well-suited to
his thought-provoking morality play. Moreover his excellent script,
the performances (especially from Winbolt) remarkable locations and
atmospheric music make this film a very satisfying experience. I wish
I could have made a more significant contribution. Mixing sound is
the least of my talents, and it often shows...
