In
the comfort of his home, a butterfly collector dozes restlessly.
Suffocation and death by cyanide await him in his nightmares, the
same fate his butterflies had to endure. But is this really a dream?
Typical
student film: lots of melodramatic death imagery, with an improbable
twist for a climax. There's no dialogue, and the music is ridden with twangs.
Filming
took place in an alleyway, running between two cinemas, just across
the esplanade from the Bournemouth Pavillion Theatre. Ed went to the
trouble and expense of hiring a giant HMI arc lamp, big enough to
cast shadows on the clouds and turn the dank thoroughfare into a set
from a 30s film noir.
Until
I looked back at the film recently, I'd forgotten that I'd actually
been the camera operator as well as the editor! I thought I'd just
gone along to observe the shoot and take stills for Ed. Anyway, we
had lots of fun making gates slam shut of their own accord, and
shooting a grisly death sequence at the bottom of a waste disposal chute.
