A
shoplifting charmer who specialises in rare books is certain his
latest victim will be a pushover: an elderly bookseller who runs his
business in a seemingly distracted manner. The thief is tantalised by
shelves of rare novels, but he hasn't reckoned on the old man's guile.
I
was very lucky in persuading Peter Jeffrey and Martin Jarvis to take
the lead roles in this drama. Their kindness, encouragement and
support were brilliant, particularly their suggestions on how I could
improve my direction of actors. They also declined to accept the
expenses I offered: Peter said it was his way of giving something
back. Both provided their own costumes and Peter wore the 1950s
spectacles created for his character in Lipstick on your Collar. I
was very upset to learn of his death over Christmas 1999 from
prostate cancer.
Of
the two films I made for my degree, I was most pleased with this
one. Ed Robinson, my script editor, kept it tightly worded, and my
team did a brilliant job in realising the shoot. It took a day to
film, using around 50 set-ups. The location was Yesterday's Books in
Charminster, Bournemouth.
